"In the garden, autumn is indeed the crowning glory of the year, bringing us the fruition of months of thought and care and toil."

Our sustainability leadership story this time around, “
Urban Farms: An Upcoming Film Takes a Fresh Look,” is about movie-makers Dan Susman and Andrew Monbouquette. The crowning glory for them is harvesting the footage they acquired on a summer-long journey across the US filming urban farms and gardens as they build their forthcoming documentary “
Growing Cities.” One can only imagine the vegetable and fruit harvests these urban gardens and farms are producing about now! These are young, innovative sustainability leaders; we can all learn from their story.

- Completing a collaborative project with Joslyn Institute for Sustainable Communities (JISC). We’re now writing final reports for four
Conversation Conferences on Nebraska Environment and Sustainability. SLI partnered with JISC to develop and deliver these conferences, 2010/2011, in which citizens participated in lively, informative conversations about Nebraska’s critical resources: Food, Water, Land, Energy and Materials. The conferences followed 21
Nebraska Sustainability Leadership Workshops offered to local community leaders across the state in 2008-2010. Excellent projects and great learning for everyone involved.
- Assembling materials from a new crop of publications for inclusion in the Leadership for Sustainability course being offered in the School of Public Administration at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. Objectives include introducing students to expanded dimensions of sustainability as well as frame-breaking approaches to leadership for change. Instructor, Mary A. Ferdig, Ph.D.
- Continuing to convene
Exploration Dialogues in which participants experiment with self-organizing leadership and authentic dialogue practices — while exploring, learning and generating new thinking about critical sustainabiliy leadership challenges. The Omaha Exploration Dialogue is picking up steam; plans for another in Portland, OR are underway.
- Continuing work on the book manuscript which highlights effective leadership practice. We’re researching good examples of everyday sustainability leaders in action for inclusion. Your stories, or your suggestions for others’ stories, are welcomed!
